R U OKAY

Today is RUOK day. A little question that makes a big difference! I was trying to post on World Sucide Prevention day on Tuesday, a day where we remember our family and friends who have passed to suicide, but I am currently in an area in Indonesia where the power and internet comes on and off regularly.

Being a #communitycustodian through the @theais_ and @lifelineaustralia has been so humbling and has really opened my eyes to the struggles our society faces. Myself and 20 other athletes are lucky enough to share our stories of mental resilience as competitive athletes, talk about our highs and lows, spread the awareness around mental health issues and help reduce the stigma around it.

Today, and everyday let’s inspire and empower one another to meaningfully connect, let’s start conversations, and strengthen our sense of belonging because we know people are there for us. You don't need to be an expert to reach out - just a good friend and a great listener. If someone is struggling, ask “Are you okay?” You never know, this, or a simple smile could change someone’s day for the good.

I’m in Indonesia for a surfing competition and after facing another tough loss this year, these girls had my back, cheered me up and reminded me why I’m here. There are so many highs and lows, no one ever sees the tears behind the scenes. It’s gets tough and really frustrating.

But don’t hesitate to reach out, remember nobodies life sails perfectly with ease.

Together let’s provide one another with hope, compassion and connection. Asking #RUOK could help someone in need to open up and unload. And no matter what your pal will know you care. Let’s reduce the stigma around mental health and look out for one another to help create a suicide free Australia. It only takes one person to change your world ✨💛 || Lifeline • 11 13 14 || #goodvibessaveslives #theAIS #communitycustodians #lifelineAUS #surfing #surfingaustralia
